Within just a few hours, the coastal towns and highway give way to the vast, dry savannah of Tsavo East National Park. Here, red earth, acacia bush, river landscapes and open plains meet diverse wildlife – ideal for guests who want an intensive safari experience during their stay on the coast without planning a long round trip.

Tsavo East has a character all its own. It is particularly famous for its elephants, whose skin often takes on the color of the iron-rich red soil after dust bathing. During the game drives, you may also encounter lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and various species of antelope. Bird life is remarkably diverse as well. Which animals actually appear, however, is always determined by nature.

The landscape itself is an essential part of the safari experience. The Galana River runs through the dry surroundings like a lifeline. Other notable landscape features include Lugard Falls, Mudanda Rock, Aruba Dam and the Yatta Plateau – an extraordinary volcanic landscape feature described by Kenya Wildlife Service as the world’s longest lava flow.

From the Kenyan coast directly into Tsavo East

For guests staying on the coast, this safari offers a compact way to combine a beach holiday with a genuine bush experience. According to Kenya Wildlife Service, Bachuma Gate is around 110 road kilometers from Mombasa. Depending on your exact starting point, traffic and route, the journey from Mombasa into Tsavo East should take approximately 2 to 4 hours.

Once you enter the national park, the safari does not simply begin at the destination: from this point on, the journey itself becomes part of the experience. Instead of trying to get from one point to another as quickly as possible, the park tracks allow time for wildlife sightings, photo stops and the different landscapes of Tsavo.

On the first day, there is time for game drives before and after lunch. The following morning, you head out again while temperatures are still pleasant and the bush slowly awakens. Afterwards, the safari takes you back toward Mombasa and the Kenyan coast.

Tsavo – wilderness with an extraordinary history

Tsavo is known not only for its landscapes and wildlife. The region is closely connected to one of the best-known chapters in Kenya’s early railway history. During the construction of a railway bridge over the Tsavo River in 1898, two male lions attacked workers and temporarily brought construction to a halt. They later became known as the Tsavo Man-Eaters.

For many years, widely differing figures were given for the number of victims. John Henry Patterson, who killed the two lions in 1898, later claimed 135 victims. Scientific research, however, produced a substantially lower estimate of around 35 people eaten by the two lions. The preserved lions are now held by the Field Museum in Chicago.

The history of the protected area itself also goes back many decades: Tsavo East was established in April 1948. Today, the park forms part of the much larger Tsavo ecosystem and plays an important role in protecting its wildlife.

Conservation in the Tsavo ecosystem today

Conservation in Tsavo does not stop at the boundaries of the national park. Kenya Wildlife Service and partner organizations work in areas including wildlife monitoring, anti-poaching measures, water supply and reducing human-wildlife conflict. Tsavo Trust, for example, supports KWS through ground and aerial monitoring as well as dedicated programs protecting elephants with exceptionally large tusks.

Water is another important issue. Water points and boreholes have been developed within the Tsavo ecosystem to improve climate resilience. At the same time, Tsavo Trust is pursuing long-term sand dam projects designed to retain water in seasonal riverbeds and provide additional water resources for wildlife during dry periods.
