Overview

The two-day Tsavo East Safari is the perfect coastal safari from Diani Beach or Mombasa in Kenya’s largest national park. Tsavo East covers 13,747 square kilometres and is famous for its red elephants – around 12,000 to 15,000 elephants bathe in iron-rich laterite soil, giving them a spectacular reddish colour.

Large herds of 50 to 100 animals are often seen along the Galana River, which runs through the park like a lifeline. Hippos grunt in the water, Nile crocodiles bask on sandbanks. The park is less visited than the Masai Mara, allowing for authentic, undisturbed safari experiences. Tsavo lions are world-famous – males often have little or no mane, an adaptation to the hot climate.

The legendary “man-eaters of Tsavo” killed numerous workers during the construction of the railway in 1898. This compact safari offers intensive wildlife viewing in a short time: afternoon and early morning drives guarantee sightings of elephants, buffalos, zebras, giraffes, lions, and leopards. Accommodations are located directly in the park on the Voi River with views of water holes. Short travel time: only 3 to 3.5 hours from Diani Beach to Tsavo East. Ideal for beach vacationers who want to experience authentic wilderness without a long journey to Nairobi.
