Tsavo East National Park — Kenya’s largest game reserve

With an area of 11,747 km², Tsavo East National Park is the largest national park in Kenya. It was established in 1948 and, together with the Tsavo West National Park, forms the Tsavo ecosystem, which covers over 22,000 km². The park is located in Makueni, Taita-Taveta and Kilifi counties and is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Tsavo National Park is a large area divided into two parts: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Both are located in Kenya and are known for their abundant wildlife. Tsavo East, also known as the “Taru Desert”, is located near the town of Voi and borders Tanzania, while Tsavo West is a little further west, also in Kenya’s Coast Province.

Tsavo East lies mainly in Taita-Taveta County, but also in Makueni and Kilifi Counties. Kitui County lies further north and is not directly connected to Tsavo East National Park. Tana River County is also further away and is not directly crossed by the park.

Landscape & Geography

The Tsavo East National Park is characterized by wide, open savannas, semidesert steppes and acacia forests. Central landscape features are:

  • Galana River: Formed by the confluence of the Athi and Tsavo Rivers and crosses the park from west to east.
  • Yatta Plateau: At around 290 km, the longest lava field in the world, formed by lava flows from Ol Donyo Sabuk.
  • Mudanda Rock: An inselberg that serves as a water trap and forms a natural dam — ideal for wildlife watching.
  • Lugard Falls: A series of rapids on the Galana River, named after Frederick Lugard.
  • Aruba-Dam: Built in 1952 on the Voi River; the resulting reservoir attracts numerous animals and waterfowl.

Animal world

The park is home to an impressive variety of wild animals:

Mammals

  • Elephants: The “red elephants” of Tsavo owe their colour to the red earth with which they powder themselves.
  • Lions: Known for males with little or no mane — an adaptation to the hot climate.
  • Other species: giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, kudus, oryx, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and hippos.

Birds

Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the park, including:

Heron

Ostriches

Secretary birds

Weaverbirds

Kingfishers

Hornbills
