Kenya’s Ultimate Rhino Safari – Solio, Ol Pejeta & Mara

6 Days

Kenya’s Ultimate Rhino Safari is the only six-day tour that combines three of the world’s best rhino conservation areas in one exclusive itinerary. This journey takes you through Kenya’s central highlands – from the private Solio Ranch, home to the world’s highest concentration of rhinos, to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth, to Lake Nakuru National Park with its extraordinary leopard and rhino populations. Two full days in the Solio region guarantee intense encounters with over 250 rhinos, followed by two nights at the luxurious Sweetwaters Serena Camp in the heart of Ol Pejeta. Nowhere else in Africa do travelers have a higher guarantee of seeing both black and white rhinos in the wild – over 450 rhinos in six days.

Region, landscape, atmosphere – Kenya’s Ultimate Rhino Safari

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is located in the vast plains between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters. The landscape is characterized by golden grass plains, scattered acacia forests, and dramatic views of both mountain ranges. In the morning, Mount Kenya is shrouded in mist, while the Aberdares rise like a green wall to the west. From here, Solio Ranch is just a few minutes away – a private reserve with 19,000 hectares of open savannah. Solio is different from classic national parks: no dense bushes, no crowded trails, just wide grasslands where rhinos roam freely. The atmosphere is calm and exclusive – only a few vehicles are allowed in the area at a time, which guarantees undisturbed observations.

Sweetwaters Serena Camp is located in the heart of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy at an altitude of 1,800 metres, directly at the foot of Mount Kenya. The conservancy combines open grasslands with swamps, river courses and acacia forests. The landscape is more diverse than in Solio – from dry plains in the north, where cheetahs hunt, to wet marshlands in the south, where herds of elephants and buffalo graze. The atmosphere is lively: zebras and giraffes roam in large groups, lions rest under acacia trees, and the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya form a spectacular backdrop. The camp itself is located at a waterhole where elephants drink at night.

Lake Nakuru National Park lies deeper in the Rift Valley at around 1,750 metres and offers a completely different backdrop. The alkaline lake is framed by dense fever acacia forests where leopards rest. The steep walls of the Rift Valley rise dramatically in the background, and on clear days, the sky is reflected in the shimmering water. The atmosphere is more intimate – the park is smaller and more compact, which means that rhinos, giraffes and buffalo can often be seen at close range. Seasonally, millions of flamingos turn the lake pink – one of Africa’s most iconic images.

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is located between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares in a peaceful, natural setting. The lodge offers spacious rooms with en suite bathrooms, hot showers and balconies overlooking the surrounding plains and mountains. The pool offers refreshment after long game drives, and in the evenings guests gather around the campfire under the clear highland starry sky. The restaurant serves international and Kenyan cuisine using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The lodge is an ideal base for intensive Solio explorations – the ranch is only a short drive away, allowing for early morning drives without a long journey.

Sweetwaters Serena Camp is a luxury tented camp in the heart of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The 39 spacious tented suites are stylishly furnished with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, verandas and views of an illuminated waterhole where elephants, buffalo and rhinos drink at night. The camp combines classic safari atmosphere with modern comforts: wooden floors, warm blankets, and paraffin lamps in the evening. The pool is centrally located with views of the plains and Mount Kenya. The restaurant serves fine dining, and in the evening, meals are served around the campfire under the stars. The location in the middle of the conservancy means that wildlife sightings are possible around the clock – in the morning, giraffes graze in front of the tents, and at night, hyenas howl in the distance.

Lake Nakuru Lodge is located in the middle of the park, surrounded by yellow fever acacia forests and overlooking the lake. The rooms are classically furnished with wooden furniture, warm blankets and balconies where baboons visit in the morning. The lodge has a historic charm and has been hosting safari guests for decades. The restaurant serves buffet meals featuring international and Kenyan dishes, and in the evenings, fireplaces crackle in the lounge. The garden attracts birds: superb starlings, weaver birds and occasionally crowned cranes. Its location in the middle of the park means that safari trips start right outside the door.

Tips & hints

The best time to go on Kenya’s Ultimate Rhino Safari is any time of year, as rhinos do not migrate seasonally and are permanently present in all three conservation areas. For optimal conditions, we recommend the dry seasons: January to March and July to October. During these months, the roads are easily passable, the vegetation is lower, and animals congregate at waterholes. The rainy seasons from April to June and November bring green landscapes and active birdlife, but also muddy roads – a four-wheel drive vehicle is then mandatory.

Clothing should be neutral and practical: khaki, beige, olive green and brown are ideal for safaris. Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers protect against the sun, insects and thorns. It can get cool in the mornings and evenings, especially at altitudes of 1,800 to 1,900 metres – a fleece jacket or jumper is essential. Sturdy footwear is important for optional hikes and visits to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary. A hat, sunglasses and sun cream with a high sun protection factor are essential.

Photographers should bring a telephoto lens with a minimum focal length of 300 mm – ideally 400 to 600 mm for close-ups of rhinos and big cats. A wide-angle lens is suitable for landscape shots with Mount Kenya in the background. Binoculars are essential for bird watching and spotting animals in the distance. Spare batteries and memory cards are important. A dust cover for cameras is advisable, especially in Solio, where open grasslands become dusty when it is windy.

Why this experience is exceptional

Kenya’s Ultimate Rhino Safari is unique because it offers the highest rhino sighting guarantee in the world. No other six-day safari combines three top rhino conservation areas with a total of over 450 rhinos and two full days of Solio exploration. Solio Ranch is a private reserve with the highest rhino density in the world – over 250 rhinos on just 19,000 hectares. That equates to around 13 rhinos per 1,000 hectares, the highest concentration globally. The ranch is not open to the public and has limited permits – only a few operators have access, making this tour extremely rare.

Two full days in the Solio region means several intensive game drives: an afternoon on the day of arrival, a full day with morning and afternoon drives, and a morning drive on the day of departure. It is not unusual to see ten to fifteen rhinos during each drive, both black and white rhinos. The open grasslands offer perfect visibility without dense bushes – rhinos are easy to find and photograph. Some rhinos in Solio are so accustomed to vehicles that they graze just a few metres away.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is known worldwide as the home of the last two northern white rhinos on earth: Najin and Fatu, mother and daughter, who live under 24-hour surveillance. Visiting their enclosure is a deeply moving experience – a direct glimpse into the fragility of endangered species and the desperate efforts to save them through artificial insemination. Ol Pejeta is also home to the largest population of black rhinos in East Africa – over 100 animals that have been successfully bred and, in some cases, relocated to other parks. The conservancy is also the only one in East Africa with chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the few protected areas in Kenya where both black and white rhinos live together – over 100 rhinos roam the forests around the lake. The park also has one of the highest densities of leopards in Kenya. Rothschild’s giraffes, one of the rarest subspecies, have been successfully reintroduced here. The combination of rhinos, leopards and millions of seasonal flamingos makes Nakuru the perfect finale.
