Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, located in the Great Rift Valley northwest of Nairobi. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,880 meters above sea level, it is bordered by the town of Naivasha to the south and surrounded by diverse ecosystems including acacia woodlands and volcanic landscapes. The lake covers an area that varies seasonally, typically spanning around 139 square kilometres, making it one of Kenya’s significant freshwater bodies. The lake has supported human settlement for centuries, with indigenous communities utilizing its resources for fishing and agriculture. Located along historical trade routes connecting the interior of East Africa with the coast, the Lake Naivasha region developed as an important agricultural and commercial centre. Following British colonial influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area became known for flower farming and horticulture, industries that continue to thrive today.
