Lake Bogoria is a saline alkaline lake in Kenya. Located in the Great Rift Valley in Baringo County, it is bordered by the Siracho Escarpment to the east, volcanic hills to the west, the town of Marigat to the south, and Lake Baringo to the north. Lake Bogoria is geographically in the East African Rift system and is among the region’s most geothermally active areas. The lake itself is the main feature, while the nearby town of Marigat serves as the gateway for visitors.
The natural features of Lake Bogoria have existed for millennia, and the area has remained largely undisturbed in its ecological character. Situated within the migratory corridor of the East African Rift between Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania, the Lake Bogoria ecosystem developed a distinct identity based on its geothermal activity and alkaline waters. Known for natural phenomena including hot springs and geysers, the area consists of diverse habitats and functions as a protected reserve. Following Kenya’s independence in the 20th century, conservation efforts intensified and the lake gained protected status with support from international organizations. Lake Bogoria fostered scientific interest during periods of ecological research and serves as critical habitat for lesser flamingos. In 2011, it gained recognition as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and became part of the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage Site, establishing a conservation framework characterizing Bogoria’s protection today.
