Amboseli National Park is world-famous for spectacular elephant photography against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. The park covers 392 square kilometres at the foot of Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli is home to around 1,600 to 2,000 elephants – the main attraction. Large family groups of 30 to 50 animals with young can be seen every day. Other animals: buffalo (large herds in swamp areas), zebras, wildebeests, giraffes (Masai giraffes), Grant’s gazelles, Thomson’s gazelles, impalas, waterbucks, lions (about 10 prides in the park), cheetahs (frequently in open plains), spotted hyenas, jackals, hippos (in permanent swamps). Over 400 bird species have been documented, including pelicans, various heron species, African fish eagles, flamingos in swamp areas, and secretary birds. Leopards are extremely rare. Rhinos are not present – Amboseli has no rhino population.
