Tsavo East National Park, established on April 1, 1948, is one of Kenya’s oldest and largest national parks, covering an area of 11,747 km². It lies within the counties of Taita-Taveta and Tana River and is renowned for its vast grasslands, semi-arid plains, and the impressive Yatta Plateau – the world’s longest lava flow.

The park is home to a wide range of wildlife, including the famous “red elephants of Tsavo,” which get their reddish appearance from dust-bathing in the region’s iron-rich soil. Other notable species include maneless lions, cheetahs, leopards, black rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffalos, and over 600 bird species.

A historic highlight of the region is the story of the “Man-Eaters of Tsavo” – two male lions that attacked railway workers in 1898 during the construction of the Uganda Railway.
