🌍 Tsavo East National Park — Kenya's largest game reserve
Tsavo East National Park spans 11,747 km², making it the largest national park in Kenya. The Kenya Wildlife Service manages the park, which was founded in 1948. Together with Tsavo West National Park, it forms the vast Tsavo ecosystem of over 22,000 km². Tsavo East lies in Makueni, Taita-Taveta and Kilifi counties.
In general, Tsavo National Park covers a huge area and consists of two regions: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Both lie in Kenya and are famous for their abundant wildlife. Tsavo East, sometimes called the “Taru Desert”, lies near the town of Voi and borders Tanzania, while Tsavo West stretches further inland in Kenya’s Coast Province.
Tsavo East lies mostly in Taita-Taveta County, with smaller areas in Makueni and Kilifi. Kitui County lies further north, while Tana River County is located east of the park.
🌄 Landscape & Geography
The landscape of Tsavo East is defined by open savannahs, semidesert steppes and acacia woodlands. Some of the most important features include:
Galana River: This major river, formed by the Athi and Tsavo Rivers, flows west to east across the park.
Yatta Plateau: At 290 km, it’s the longest lava flow in the world, created by lava from Ol Donyo Sabuk.
Mudanda Rock: This natural rock formation acts as a rainwater catchment and a dam — perfect for wildlife viewing.
Lugard Falls: A series of wild rapids named after British explorer Frederick Lugard.
Aruba Dam: Built on the Voi River in 1952, it created a water reservoir that attracts animals and water birds.
🐘 Wildlife
Tsavo East is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife.
Among the mammals, you’ll find:
Elephants: Famous for their red colour, caused by dusting themselves with the red soil.
Lions: Males often have minimal or no manes — an adaptation to the heat.
In addition, you may encounter giraffes, zebras, buffalos, impalas, kudus, oryx, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and hippos.
When it comes to birdlife, over 500 species have been observed, including:
Herons
Ostriches
Secretary birds
Weaver birds
Kingfishers
Hornbills
